In a swift operation jointly undertaken by salvagers and Navy divers, the hydraulic pump that fell into the sea while being carried by naval helicopter to the grounded ship MT Nu-Shi Nalini was finally recovered on Wednesday evening.
According to highly-placed sources, the hydraulic pump, though slightly damaged, was repairable and could take a day or two for repairs before it could be put to use again.
“The area where the hydraulic pump fell was immediately marked with some empty barrels which helped in its recovery. The entire operations were taken up with the assistance of the naval diving team,” said
a source.
“The pump fell into the sea in the morning while being carried by a naval helicopter to the grounded ship on account of bad weather after the helicopter carrying the pump faced vertical oscillations. However swift operations ensured that the hydraulic pump was successfully recovered,” said the source.
The joint recovery team comprised of salvaging
contractors and the naval diving team.
The recovered pump was later loaded into canoes and brought back to MPT breakwater berth where a shore crane was waiting to lift it.
“It is now understood that the pump is slightly damaged but definitely repairable. It is upto the MPT or the government to use another hydraulic pump or alternative methods for the operations considering the urgency, but surely the recovered pump is repairable. It may take a day or two for repairs,” added the source.
