The conviction rate of drug cases has remained under 10 per cent since 2014. The rate rose from 7.4 per cent in 2014 to 8.1 per cent in 2015. However, it fell to five per cent in 2016.
This year, only one case (2.5 per cent of the trials) has resulted in convictions.
On the other hand, 14 persons have been convicted in 13 cases booked under the Narcotic Drugs Psychotropic Substances Act from 2014 till June 2017.
The information was made available in a reply tabled by Chief Minister and Home Minister Manohar Parrikar to a question tabled by Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar.
Interestingly, while the rate of conviction continues to remain low, the number of cases booked by the Anti Narcotics Cell of Goa Police has rose steadily.
ANC has booked almost double the cases and has recorded four times the haul during the first half of 2017 as against the corresponding period in the last year.
Whopping Rs 64.5 lakh worth of drugs have been seized so far this year.
ANC has booked 14 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act between January and June this year as against the eight cases booked during the same period in 2016.
A total of 16 accused have been arrested in these 14 narco cases over the last six months.
Interestingly, 10 of these 16 accused are Indian nationals. Of the six others, four are Nigerian nationals in addition to a South Korean and a British national.
