At a time when power supply has become a basic need, a family in Velsao has been living without electricity since Liberation and Cortalim MLA Anton Vas has now assured aid to the family.
The plight of Satu Satarkar and his wife came to light when people carrying out a survey in the area realised that the elderly couple did not have the means to even apply for an electricity connection and decided to live without electricity for several decades.
When contacted, Satu Satarkar, who is around 80 years, said he would initially work on fishing canoes to pull the nets but could not continue working due to advancing age.
The couple claimed that they have all other documents like election cards and despite having voted for so many years, neither politician nor political party had come to their aid.
Speaking to reporters, Surendra Madkaikar said he had realised about the family when he had been to Velsao some time ago.
"Their financial condition is very poor and there is no source of income. I have now decided to help them by enrolling them under Atal Asra scheme and Dayanand Social Welfare Scheme.” “The Atal Asra scheme may get him Rs 1.5 lakh, but it is not enough to repair his house and I appeal to many philanthropists in Goa to come forward and help them build a house and get them an electricity connection which will improve their quality of life at this age," said Madkaikar.
When news of Satu Satarkar’s plight broke out, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, who was returning to Cortalim after meeting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, went along with Velsao Panch Remedios Noronha and former panch Roquezinho D'Souza to meet the Satarkar family.
"I am also shocked to realise that this family has been living without electricity for so many years. I assure to do whatever I can to help the family with all the facilities with immediate effect,” said Vas.
“I have already spoken to the panch member and he had also got them the NOC but they are so poor that they did not have the money to apply or follow the procedure. We have now assured to take their file to the department and get it processed. I will also provide them financial aid in whatever way I can so that they don’t have to suffer again without basic facilities," said Vas.
