Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai said the government should think out of the box to involve Goan women even for beach cleaning as part of women empowerment instead of awarding contracts to established contractors.

Addressing a function held to mark the inauguration of The Goan Culture Shop by the women of Fatorda on International Women’s Day, where different masalas and handmade soaps will be exhibited for sale, Sardesai appealed to the women to set a target for themselves to run the Fatorda model, export the same to other constituencies and become a Goa model.

Harping on women empowerment, he said true empowerment lies in getting the women in the decision-making process and cited the case of Margao Municipal Chairperson Pooja Naik. “After we made Pooja the MMC Chairperson, a signal has been sent out that anyone, irrespective of religion and caste can occupy the post,” he added.

Referring to the announcement made by the MMC Chairperson on 50 per cent reservation of gaddas for women, Sardesai said Pooja has made the announcement based on the fact that women comprise 50 per cent of the population.
