Several motorists were left fuming as traffic signals along the busy junctions at Dabolim Airport road and MES College junction have become non-functional for the last many days.
While both these junctions see heavy traffic along the highway and are prone to accidents, the situation at present is such that the airport junction is manually controlled by the traffic police, while the traffic signal at the MES college junction is unattended.
“Both these locations are on the national highway where people usually speed. Non-functional traffic signals would mean there could chances of accidents, especially near the MES College, where there have been many mishaps in the past. This was the main reason to have a traffic signal at the location in the first place,” complained a motorist Pritam Naik.
“At least, the airport junction has some traffic police at the site but after dusk, it is also unattended.”
Another motorist, Rajesh Naik, said traffic signals were vital especially at the MES College junction.
“The area houses a college where many students are constantly moving and crossing roads. There are parents who pick and drop their children. The area also has a full-fledged residential colony and witnesses a huge number of vehicles during peak hours. Speeding taxis have added to the danger at the unmanned traffic signal at the MES College junction,” said Naik.
When contacted, sources in the Vasco Traffic Cell said the traffic signal at Dabolim Airport junction was non-functional as there were some underground works taken up as a part of the grade separator project.
“We are presently monitoring traffic manually and after the grade separator is ready, the traffic signal may be removed. As far as the traffic signal at MES college is concerned, there was an accident where a speeding car hit the circuit generation box and damaged it. We have ordered the part from Pune and it will arrive by weekend, after
which the traffic signal will start working,” said the source.
