The Goa Government Employees Association (GGEA) on Saturday wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) requesting him to declare the day after polling as a holiday for all “polling staff” who are going to be “on duty” on April 23.

“Considering the elections, the Government of Goa has declared a public holiday on April 23, but the government servants who are on election duty on April 23 who also include staff like Returning Officers (ROs), Assistant Returning Officers (AROs), and Assistant Electoral Returning Officers (AEROs), have long, concentrating, tiring duty from 4 am which probably ends the next day at 2 am or even later,” states the letter signed by Prashant Devidas, president of the GGEA.

Devidas stated that considering the long and tiring hours put in by the staff, it will affect the health status of the polling staff, who undertake their duties without complaining. Therefore, giving the staff a holiday on April 24 will not hamper election duty, the GGEA has asked that April 24 be a holiday for them.
