The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) led by Chairperson Girish Borker cleared encroachments in the Vasco vegetable market.
Borkar along with the MMC Market Committee member Councillor Prajay Mayekar and municipal inspectors paid a surprise visit to the market premises, much to the surprise of the vendors.
The team then got the entire area cleared of encroachments and also issued warnings to the vendors to refrain from encroachment on public areas.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker no vendor would be spared if encroachments were found in the markets.
"I took this drive because vendors seem to neglect the demands of the people. This drive is conducted because markets are found congested and people cannot move freely because of the encroachment of vendors,” said Borker.
“I have warned all vendors today that I will not visit the market again but hand over full rights and free hand to municipal inspectors to confiscate whatever is found on the roads and causing congestion and inconvenience to the people.”
“We also have the Salgaonkar office in the vicinity and their staff cannot even come and go out of the office because of these encroachments. This happens only because the vendors have begun to keep their goods on the road.”
Borker said he has instructed municipal inspectors to proceed with the next step of issuing fines.
“If vendors still don't learn a lesson, there will be a confiscation drive on a daily basis. I am not against anyone's business but they have to do business within limits and not encroach roads and footpaths meant for people,” he said.
MMC Councillor Prajay Mayekar also spoke on the occasion.
