Ex-Mapusa councillor Tarak Arolkar has been arrested in an alleged fraud case after a businessman accused him of impersonating the owner of a property in Assagao.
Crime Branch (CB) sleuths on Wednesday said the Mapusa resident was arrested for allegedly cheating businessman Pankaj Bajaj of Rs 40 lakh by falsely claiming ownership of a property in Assagao and producing forged documents to facilitate the deal.
Arolkar, a resident of Pedem, Mapusa, was arrested under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for cheating) and 471 (using a forged document as genuine) of the IPC.
Bajaj alleged that Arolkar had represented himself as the owner and sole authorised person to transact a property bearing Survey No. 37/4 in Assagao. He allegedly assured Bajaj that the property's title was clear and marketable.
The complainant was allegedly induced to pay Rs 40 lakh towards the execution of a sale deed. However, despite receiving the money, Arolkar allegedly failed to execute and register the sale deed and later avoided the complainant, the CB said.
During the inquiry, it was allegedly found that Arolkar was neither the owner of the property nor a holder of any memorandum of understanding concerning it. The sale deed shown to the complainant was also found to be forged and fabricated.
