A family had a narrow escape after a part of the roof of their house collapsed at New Vaddem in Vasco on Thursday night, causing panic in the locality.

Fortunately, no one was injured, though the incident left the family shaken and raised concerns about the safety of ageing houses in the area.

According to information, a section of the roof at the house of Vijay Mallah suddenly collapsed late on Thursday night. Family members were inside the house at the time but managed to get out safely. Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing a loud noise and helped the family.

The exact cause of the collapse is not yet known. It is unclear whether it was due to structural weakness, recent rains, or other reasons. The damaged portion of the house has suffered significant loss, and the family is assessing the damage.

Soon after the incident, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar visited the site to take stock of the situation. He spoke to the affected family, inspected the damage, and assured them of all possible help for repairs.

Salkar also said the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities to ensure timely assistance.

While expressing relief that no lives were lost, he urged residents of old or damaged houses to remain cautious during the monsoon and report any signs of structural damage immediately.
