Farmer dies of electrocution while checking pump

CANACONA

A 33-year-old farmer from Satorlim-Gaondongrim died after allegedly being electrocuted while checking a water pump in a well at his paddy field.

According to Canacona police, Yeshwant Gaonkar left home early Tuesday to check the pump, about 500 metres away, but did not return.

He had gone to check whether the motor was functioning and could pump water to the fields if rains failed.

Worried family members began searching and found Gaonkar unconscious near the well at around 7 pm.

Suspecting electrocution, they rushed him by ambulance to the Canacona Health Centre, where a doctor declared him dead.

Police conducted a panchanama and sent the body for autopsy to the South Goa District Hospital, Margao.

It was later handed over to the family for the final rites.
