The season of harvesting of fresh water lake fish has begun on Sunday with a group of farmers harvesting fish from a lake at Curtorim.
With Curtorim village blessed with a number of water bodies, where the farmers store the water for irrigation of the paddy fields, farmers also tap the water resource for fish breeding. In fact, not only people from Salcete, but fresh water fish lovers from across the State make a beeline to Curtorim to lay their hands on the fresh water fish.
Though the farmers had to contend with moderate fish, they, however, expressed satisfaction that they have revived fish breeding in the water body after a gap of around 25 years.
A farmer Pedro Gomes informed that the paddy fields have been lying fallow over the last 25 years, adding that since the fields have been lying fallow, fish breeding too had come to a halt in the water body. “The fields were left fallow due to a host of reasons, including the entry of saline water due to breach in the bundh. This time, the youngsters decided to go for fish breeding in the water body. Though the catch has not been much since the water level was not proper, there is fish in the water body. We will again cast the nets after the water is drained out,” he added.
