‘Small’ fishermen/women who want to sell fish in Goa, and are coming from within a 60 kilometer distance from the state will be allowed to carry out business in Goa without following the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) guidelines, informed Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Tuesday.
Rane also informed that the government will make sure that no bigger fish traders will be allowed into the state without following the FDA guidelines, and that this exemption was only for the small fishermen/women.
“When I spoke to (these people seeking exemption from guidelines), there were traders behind them. But traders will not be allowed into the state (without complying with all the guidelines set down by the FDA),” Rane told media persons.
‘Small’ fisherwomen had, a week ago, met the Health Minister and requested him to consider relaxing the rules for them, as they reached Goa “within an hour,” and found the FDA guidelines too stringent. Rane had promised that he would look into the matter and think of how to deal with these smaller traders, and had assured them of justice.
