CANACONA
Hundreds of parishioners and residents from nearby villages gathered at St. Anthony Church, Galgibaga, on Sunday to celebrate the annual feast of St. Anthony, traditionally observed on the third Sunday of January. The feast, which holds special significance for the local Catholic community, also drew participation from people of other faiths from Poinguinim, Loliem-Polem and neighbouring areas of Canacona taluka.
The celebrations commenced with prayers and religious observances, culminating in the solemn High Mass held in a prayerful and orderly atmosphere. The Mass was attended by Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas, newly elected Poinguinim Zilla Panchayat member Ajit Lolienkar, and other invitees. The dignitaries attended the service on a special invitation extended by the parish priest Agnelo Gomes.
Parishioners from different age groups actively participated in the liturgy, while church volunteers assisted in coordinating the programme and managing the flow of devotees. Many families made it a point to attend the feast together, underlining the strong connection between the church and the local community.
The church premises were decorated for the occasion, adding to the festive yet reverent atmosphere.
A statement issued from the office of MLA Ramesh Tawadkar said that the presence of the elected representatives added grace to the celebration and reflected unity and respect for religious traditions. The statement further noted that the feast of St. Anthony continues to promote peace, compassion and togetherness, while strengthening communal harmony among people across the region.
