A female leopard was rescued after falling into a well at the house of Mayuresh Aiya in Shelim-Loliem after grabbing a cat early Wednesday morning.
Range Forest Officer (Wildlife) Anant Velip informed that the leopard actually caught the unsuspecting cat which was asleep in the backyard of a house.
While fleeing with its prey, the leopard accidentally fell into the well and was unable to come out.
According to residents, the incident came to light after they heard sounds of the leopard struggling in the well.
The leopard was successfully rescued by RFO Velip and his team of forest rescuers and guards. The cat was, however, found dead inside the well.
The leopard was taken to the rescue centre at Hathipal in Cotigao wildlife sanctuary and subjected to a medical checkup. Forest officials informed that after a medical checkup, the wild cat will be released in a natural habitat.
RFO Velip further informed that there are leopards randomly venturing into residential areas of Canacona.
