A sub-adult female leopard was rescued by a forest rescue team after the wild cat landed in a well at Velim late Wednesday night.
Fortunately, the leopard did not sustain any injuries and was released into its natural habitat after it was found hale and hearty.
Deputy Conservator of Forests, South Prem Kumar, IFS told the media that the forest mobile squad, Margao range received a rescue call at around 9 pm on Wednesday informing that a leopard has fallen in an open well at Goenchea Bhatt, Velim.
Immediately, the forest department rescue personnel Julio Quadros, Benhail Antao along with forest department staff RFO Margao Prakash Naik, Forest Guard Samarth Naik, Guruprasad Virdikar, Sajjan Naik, Navjeevan Naik, Sajjan Juvekar, Janu, Driver Joquim Fernandes, Satyawan Malekar, Bagwan Redkar reached the site and immediately started the operation.
Kumar said since the well was too deep, the slope had to be stabilised before commencing the operations to get the animal out. “After mobilising all the equipment at the site, the leopard was finally rescued at around midnight,” he added.
More water holes in forest to aid animals during summer
MARGAO: Suspecting that the leopard strayed into the human habitat in search of water, the Forest department has now planned to dig more water holes and ponds along the forest fringe areas to save runoff water during the monsoons.
Dy Conservator of Forests, South Prem Kumar informed that water saved during the monsoons would come in handy for the animals during the dry season. “We have found animals straying out of the natural habitat for want of water during summer. Hence, we are implementing a plan during the ensuing monsoons to dig more water holes and ponds in the forest fringe areas to prevent human-animal conflict during the dry months,” Kumar added.
