Barely two months after it was inaugurated, access to the beautified lake 'Sadanand Sarovar' at Nagarcem in Canacona has been restricted after a fence was erected in the adjacent property.
Sources said the fence, which was erected recently, has blocked free access to one side of the Lake.
“NOCs to donate part of the land was granted by four different landlords to construct the Rs 60 lakh beautification of this lake through the WRD,” said the source.
The project was proposed by Ward Councillor Hemant Kumar Naikgaunkar two years ago and was completed two months ago.
The beautified lake, named after freedom fighter Sadanand Naikgaunkar, who was a local resident, was inaugurated by WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar along with Canacona MLA and Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar and others.
When contacted, Ward Councillor Hemant Kumar Naikgaunkar said, “It is indeed common property and one of the landlords has a strip of land which has been fenced. Some coconut saplings are going to be planted which will give a better scenic view, but this fencing has not blocked access to the lake. But I will approach the landlord concerned with a request not to block public access to the dam.”
Located just across the NH66 road and Konkan Railway tracks, the beautified lake has benches and also proposes to have a fountain.
When contacted, an officer at the local WRD office feigned ignorance about the fence and said they would inspect the site.
