Senior bureaucrat Levinson Martins (IAS) has been appointed Chairman of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), filling a post that had remained vacant for nearly five months.

The government order, issued on Tuesday, stated that Martins, who was serving as Commissioner of Labour and Employment, has been transferred to head the GSPCB with immediate effect. The Board had been functioning under the temporary charge of the Environment Secretary after the tenure of former chairman Mahesh Patil ended in January 2025. Patil was given a brief extension until April 4, after which the position remained unfilled.

Martins, who earlier served as Member Secretary of the GSPCB for six years, was selected from among eight applicants, including outgoing chairman Patil, Dipak Gaitonde, Ulhas Sawaikar, Pradip Sarmokadam, Ganesh Shetgaonkar, Nitin Wagh and Srinet Kothwale. With nearly two decades of administrative service, Martins has previously held key roles as North Goa Collector, Deputy Collector and Director of Prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Board is also awaiting the formal appointment of a new Member Secretary. Currently, Sanjeev Joglekar is officiating in the role, but sources indicated that Geeta Nagvenkar, who tops the selection list, is likely to be named to the post soon.
