At long last, work on the beautification of the historic Lohia Maidan will be finally complete in all respects by December 31 this year.
Barring the shifting of the power transformer, the Goa Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has been told to hand over the Lohia Maidan to the Margao Municipal Council by December 31.
Beautified at a cost of around Rs 2.5 crore, the beautification work of the historic maidan is also complete, barring the works of polishing.
This became evident on Friday when Margao MLA Digambar Kamat along with Urban Development Minister Gurudas Pilarnekar, and officials of GSUDA and Margao Municipal Council took the review of the ongoing works at the site.
After the review, Kamat told the media that work on the Lohia Maidan beautification has almost come to an end.
“The contractor will complete the work by giving final touches to the site,” he said, adding that GSUDA will hand over the maidan to the Margao Municipal Council by December 31, 2022.
To a question on the shifting of the power transformer, Kamat said work on the shifting of the power transformer and the installation will be carried out by a separate tender.
“The beautification work has been carried out by spending Rs 2.5 crore. The estimate does not include shifting of the power transformer, which will be carried out by a separate tender,” he added.
The historic Lohia Maidan was taken up for beautification around five years ago when the project was mooted by then TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai. The project did not take off immediately for reasons best known to the powers that be and GSUDA, even prompting then-governor Satyapal Mallik to pay a visit to the maidan to assure freedom fighters and citizens that he would take up the matter with the government.
