MARGAO
There’s finally good news for the lawyers and Judicial officers functioning from the Margao Civil and Criminal Court building, Old market.
For, there are finally takers for the tender floated by the PWD, Buildings for the repair of the heritage building at an estimated cost of around Rs 60-odd lakh.
Officials in the know informed that the PWD finally got contractors to execute the job of repair of the heritage court building.
The PWD had e-tendered the work of repair of the court building at a cost of over Rs 60 lakh, but the proposal did not find any takers in the first round of tender.
PWD officials now say that after contractors evinced interest in executing the work of repairs of the heritage building, the department has sent the proposal to the higher-ups for expenditure sanction.
In fact, a senior PWD official pointed out that the expenditure sanction is expected to come at the earliest since the government and the Law Ministry have accorded top priority to the repair of the court building.
The Margao Civil and Criminal Court building at Old market had repeatedly hit the headlines during the monsoons over water seepage inside the courtrooms and corridors.
The building made the news after the entire roof was covered with plastic sheets in a bid to prevent water seepage, a measure that failed to stop the rain water from entering the court building.
The pathetic state of the building saw city-based lawyers staying out of the courts for a day to highlight the plight of the Judicial officers, lawyers and litigants over the delay in undertaking repairs, an action that prompted Law Minister Nilesh Cabral, who also holds the PWD portfolio, to promise early repairs.
Meanwhile, PWD officials said that the tender to execute work on a new and spacious building for the Margao Civil and Criminal Courts will be floated soon, exuding confidence that contractors will not shy away from taking up the building work.
