Fire at bouter jetty guts fishing nets, fisherman suffers Rs 12 lakh loss

Incident ahead of fishing season raises concern

Fire at bouter jetty guts fishing nets, fisherman suffers Rs 12 lakh loss

VASCO

A fire that broke out at the Bouter jetty in Vasco on Sunday afternoon destroyed several fishing nets, causing an estimated loss of about Rs 12 lakh. The incident has dealt a major blow to a local fisherman just ahead of the fishing season.

Sources said the fire started at the jetty where fishing nets were stored after routine work. The flames spread quickly and the nets were completely gutted before they could be saved. By the time the fire was brought under control, all the equipment had been destroyed.

The owner of the nets suspects foul play. He claimed that miscreants often gather near the jetty late at night to drink and party. He believes careless or deliberate acts by such elements may have led to the fire, resulting in heavy financial loss.

The incident has raised concern among the fishing community, as nets and gear are expensive and vital for their livelihood. Fishermen said the loss of nets not only causes financial damage but also disrupts fishing activity for several weeks.

The net owner has demanded a detailed investigation to find the cause of the fire and fix responsibility if foul play is found. He has also urged authorities to improve security at the jetty. The matter is likely to be reported to the police.
