A fire broke out at a garbage dumping ground near the Housing Board along the Siolim-Mapusa road in Mapusa on Saturday morning.

At least four water tankers were used by the fire tenders from the Mapusa fire station which took more than eight hours to douse the fire.

A thick layer of smoke continued to cover the area during the day. Luckily, the area was little away from residential zone but covered with thick vegetation.

“A fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday which has been brought under control. The fire penetrated the garbage heap and that made the operation difficult,” said Bosco Ferrao, Mapusa fire station in-charge.

He further said that the waste dump comprising of termacol, plastic, PVC pipes etc caught fire engulfing the whole area with smoke.

“Although we have managed to bring the fire under control, we had asked the services of a JCB to excavate the dump as the fire will continue to simmer inside,” Ferrao added.

The fire which had started in the morning was still smouldering and sending thick smoke into the air when The Goan visited the site at around 1 noon.

The fire brigade was at the spot trying to douse the embers.

The Mapusa fire station in-charge informed that it was difficult to procure the services of a JCB but finally one, Nishant Gad from Gaunsavaddo volunteered to send a JCB to the site.

“We managed to excavate the waste dump and the fire was completely extinguished at around 5 pm,” Ferrao informed.
