A massive fire broke out at the bungalow of Rakesh Waghela on Wednesday morning, gutting the kitchen and bedroom and causing damage estimated at Rs 5 lakh.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The incident occurred around 10.20 am when the Waghela family was away at work. The blaze spread swiftly through the locked house, engulfing the kitchen and bedroom.

Firefighters from the Mapusa station rushed to the spot and managed to contain the flames with foam and water, preventing further damage to the single-storey structure.

An air-conditioner, furniture, clothes, cupboards, electrical appliances, gold ornaments and other valuables were destroyed.

The family suspects the fire was caused either by a short circuit or a lamp.  Saligao police conducted a panchanama, and further investigations are in progress.
