MARGAO
Margao fire brigade rushed to the SGPDA retail market early Friday morning following a call that smoke was billowing out from the Eastern supermarket.
Fire officer Gil D’Souza informed that the fire has occurred on the mezzanine floor of the supermarket, which sells toys and stationery. He said the firemen successfully extinguished the fire before it could engulf the supermarket and the adjoining shops.
To a question, Gill informed that the fire brigade must have saved property worth around Rs 25-30 lakhs with the prompt action. The fire could have left the entire supermarket destroyed, besides the adjoining shops in the complex.
Owner Mohammed Ibrahim has said that he has suffered a loss of around Rs 4-5 lakh in the fire incident.
He has suspected a short circuit as the cause behind the fire.
