MARGAO
A major fire in the wee hours of Saturday destroyed the Tourism Department’s toilet block at the Mobor beach, besides destroying a fishermen’s hut and a fishing canoe.
The fire is believed to have originated in the toilet block, before spreading to the fishermen’s hut and destroying the fishing canoe.
The Cuncolim fire brigade rushed to the spot after receiving a call in the wee hours of Saturday, but the fire had damaged the toilet block and the adjoining hut and the fishing canoe.
President of the Shack Owners Society Cruz Cardozo said the fire first broke out in the toilet block, before it spread to the adjoining hut. “The hut was engulfed by fire and damaged the fishing canoe housed inside the structure. The fisherman has suffered a loss of around Rs 5 lakh,” Cruz said.
Saying that the Tourism department’s toilet block at Mobor lacked maintenance since it’s opening, Cruz, who has a shack at the Mobor beach, said the toilet was engulfed by fire over a year ago before the local youth had extinguished the fire.
Cuncolim police station in-charge, PI Diego Gracias, who is holding additional charge of Colva police station, said the police have received no complaint of arson in the incident.
