Two shops, a horticulture shop and a blacksmith shop were engulfed by fire at Colva on Wednesday noon, bringing to the fore the dumping of waste and garbage in the open.

Sources said the fire must have started at the garbage dump behind the two shops, before it spread to the two structures.

The owner claimed that garbage generated in the housing society as well as from the neighbourign areas is being dumped behind the shops.

“The fire must have started at the garbage dump before it spread to the shops”, the owner said.

Sarpanch Suzie Fernandes, who visited the site, said the Panchayat is collecting waste door to door, adding that people should avoid disposing of the waste in the open.

“When the contractor engaged by the panchayat is coming to collect the waste door to door,  people should not dump the waste in the open”, she said.
