A massive fire in the wee hours of Wednesday completed gutted a stationery-cum-gift shop near the Loyola school complex, destroying property worth lakhs of rupees.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 5.30 am when smoke was found coming out of the closed shop. The owner Sanjan Naik immediately rushed to the site and opened the shop, only to find the shop under fire.
The fire brigade was called in the fire fighting operations, but the property, worth lakhs of rupees, including gift and stationery items were all gutted in the inferno. “I have suffered 100 per cent loss in the fire”, the owner said.
As short circuit is suspected to be the cause behind the fire, the owner pointed out that he normally shuts down the power supply while closing the establishment, but the CCTV cameras installed at the shop require power supply.
“The CCTV cameras have been installed at the shop since we had a burglary experience in the past”, he said.
