A fire apparently caused by a short-circuit on an electricity pole having multiple alignments caused a disruption along the busy Palolem street late Thursday evening.
Despite the large fire, power supply was temporarily restored within an hour, and a regular and permanent solution was completed the next day.
Initially, sparks from the pole caught the attention of motorists and shopkeepers on the busy junction of Palolem street at about 8 pm. The sparks soon developed and the pole with multiple cables was engulfed in flames.
Canacona Electricity Dept Assistant Engineer Govind Bhat blamed data and TV cables as the cause for the short circuit.
When contacted, Bhat said, “Data cables, TV cables etc. which have been pulled on electricity poles, led to cable short circuit. However, power was restored by making a temporary arrangement within an hour that night itself. The department staff took up the remaining work.”
A social activist, Socky Da Silva, who witnessed the entire scenario said, “It’s a miracle that no one got hurt nor did any property get damaged due to the fire.”
The power was finally restored late Thursday night, informed sources.
