Firecracker sellers told to follow strict safety norms

MARGAO

With Diwali approaching, South Goa District Magistrate Egna Cleetus has directed shopkeepers, vendors and persons involved in the sale and storage of firecrackers to strictly follow fire safety precautions to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

Warning that negligence could endanger lives and cause extensive property damage, the District Magistrate has issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) outlining safety measures.

The SOP directs vendors to store firecrackers in cool, dry and well-ventilated areas, away from direct sunlight, heat sources and potential ignition points. They must not be stored near inflammable materials, LPG cylinders, cooking areas, electrical installations or open flames.

Adequate and functional fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment must be readily available at the premises. Smoking, lighting matches and using open flames in or around storage and sale areas have been strictly prohibited.

The SOP also cautions against accumulating excessive quantities of firecrackers at one location and requires safe separation from other goods.

Electrical wiring and installations must be maintained in safe condition to prevent short circuits, sparks and accidental ignition.

The advisory further prohibits displaying or storing firecrackers in a manner that obstructs public passages, emergency exits or access for fire tenders.

The SOP also directs vendors to handle firecrackers with utmost care and prevent children from accessing or handling stored firecrackers.
