The Porvorim Carnival Committee has decided to organise its first-ever mini carnival parade in Porvorim on February 17.
Stating this at a news conference in Panaji on Tuesday, Coordinator of the Porvorim Carnival Committee Anuj Harmalkar said the carnival parade will begin at 3.30 pm from the education department building and will proceed through the Service Road and terminate at ACDIL high school.
“The committee has made parking arrangements for vehicles as well as seating arrangements for people. Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik will be the chief guest while Goa Tourism Department Corporation Chairperson Ganesh Gaonkar will be guest of honour at the parade,” said Harmalkar.
“This is for the first time that with the support of the tourism department, the carnival parade under a minor category is being held at Porvorim. This will be a sort of curtain raiser for the carnival celebrations.”
Harmalker said the tourism department has sanctioned a budget of Rs 14.25 lakh to organise the carnival parade, of which Rs 5.55 lakh is for the prize money and Rs 8.7 lakh is for infrastructure.
The floats will be categorised as follows: traditional floats, club and institutional floats, family floats and clown and jokers.
The first, second, third, fourth and fifth prizes for traditional floats will be Rs 75,000, Rs 60,000, Rs 45,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000. The first, second, third, fourth and fifth prizes for the club and institutional category floats will be Rs 60,000, Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 12,000. There will also be prizes for the family and clown and joker category. The programme will end by 10 pm as per government protocol and the winners will be declared same day.
“Terms and conditions for the floats will be as per the tourism department carnival parade,” said Harmalker.
Chairman of the Porvorim Carnival Committee Swapnil Chodankar and Marina Moraes also spoke at the news conference.
