In a dramatic turn of events, the St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, on Tuesday told the JMFC court that they will hold the induction of the Students Council on Wednesday (February 15) but refused to withdraw show-cause notices seeking disciplinary action issued against three of their students, including the General Secretary Sahil Mahajan, who were part of the ABVP gang that created ruckus in the college campus.
The matter has been adjourned to March 1 for further hearing.
Counsel for St Xavier’s College Adv Zilman Coelho Pereira informed the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) that the induction of the Students Council will take place in the college on February 15 at 12.45 pm and a notice to that effect has already been fixed on the college notice board and the matter was as good as settled.
The counsel, however, refused to withdraw the suit seeking an injunction under the Section 39 of the Specific Relief Act and asked the court to fix another date to discuss the matter.
Incidentally, the college had served notices against their three students “ Sahil Mahajan (General Secretary), Shubham Malik and Vinay Raut “ for indulging in unruly behaviour and asked to show-cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against them under the University statutes.
In an eight-page notice, the college said that the three students in concert with outside students hatched a criminal conspiracy and colluded and connived in an act of criminal intimidation to pressurise and threaten bonafide students of the college and intimidate, insult and/or annoy the students and the faculty of the college.
They were asked to reply to the show-cause notice in seven days time.
Adv Praveen Phaldessai, counsel representing the ABVP students, requested the court to direct the college to withdraw the show-cause notices issued to the students.
Adv Zilman Coelho Pereira informed the court that considering the acts of the three students, the college was within its right to take disciplinary action against them.
“We are not withdrawing the notices at the moment. We will see how things shape up. If everything goes on well…the suit will come to an end,” Pereira said.
It may be recalled last month, students affiliated to ABVP forced their way into the college premises of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa and created a ruckus in the campus by disrupting ongoing classes and intimidating the college students and the faculty.
The students, mostly from other institutes, shouted slogans and hurled abuses against the Principal and other staff of the college.
