Import of fish from outside the State came to a halt on Thursday, but the local supply of fish including mackerels and sardines kept the activity going on day one of the unilateral decision by wholesale fish agents to stop importing fish at Goa’s lone fish market till Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) sets up a fish testing laboratory.
The market was flooded with mackerels, sardines and other variety of fish netted by local mechanised fishing vessels and traditional fishermen. Though fears were raised in many quarters that the import of fish from outside the State may disrupt the supply of premium fish such as kingfish, the wholesale fish market did see the presence of kingfish, pomfrets, morshes, besides shrimps on Thursday.
The platform in the wholesale fish market -- the center of activity of the wholesale fish agents -- wore a deserted look on day one of the decision by wholesalers to stop fish import.
