Fish market vendors complain of extortion

Members of the wholesale fish market Association on Monday  descended on the Margao Municipality to complain to the Chief Officer on alleged extortion of money from the vehicles coming out of the wholesale fish market after doing business.

Pointing out that the SGPDA contractor is charging the wholesale fish traders for bringing fish into the market for sale, they alleged that they are forced to pay fees when their vehicles comes out of the wholesale fish market.

They claimed that they are being issued receipts in the name of a construction firm for levying the fees outside the wholesale fish market.

The wholesale fish market  Association members told the media that they had all come to complain to the Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar that people are extorting money outside the market which comes under the domain of the Margao Municipal Coucnil.

Association secretary Sheikh Zaid told the media that the wholesale fish market association members had handed over a receipt to the Chief Officer at a recent meeting held in the Margao Municipal to prove that the members are being charged fees when the vehicles leave the wholesale fish market. “We have come today to ask the Chief officer what action he had taken since the time the receipt was handed over to him” , Zaid said, while demanding that the Margao Municipal Chief officer should clear the air and stop the extortion outside the wholesale fish market.
