The canoe, belonging to Naga Tandel of Baina, had 10 crew members on board including the owner when the incident occurred.
According to the owner Tandel, the two crew members fell in the sea when their canoe flipped sideways due to heavy underwater currents near Baina shore. "The other crew members immediately threw life jackets, but they could manage to rescue only one crew member and Shrikant Yadav drifted away in the whirlpool caused by heavy undercurrent in the sea," informed Tandel.
After a failed attempt to rescue Yadav, the canoe finally reached safely to the shore with nine crew members.
According to Mormugao Coastal PI Nerlon Albuquerque, the incident occurred at about 7 am. "Upon receiving the information, we immediately put our interceptor boats in action to trace the missing person. I also informed the Coast Guard to assist us in ariel surveillance and kept the fire brigade services on standby, if need arises. We have also instructed Drishti lifeguards to help locate the missing crew," said Albuquerque.
Meanwhile, Mormugao Coastal Police, Coast Guard and other authorities tried to search for the missing crew Yadav, but they failed to trace him till late evening.
"As Yadav was not traced till late evening, the search operation will begin again on Monday morning," informed Albuquerque. According to a Dristhi press note, the fishermen said the victim was not wearing a life jacket and didn't know to swim.
"A Drishti lifeguard set off on a Jet Ski to reach the spot and began searching for the victim." Drishti Lifesaving had issued a monsoon advisory cautioning visitors and locals not to venture into the sea as the weather and sea conditions can be unpredictable.
