Fishermen advised not to venture into sea: MPT

The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) on Monday issued an advisory cautioning fishermen not to venture into the sea considering reports of cyclone in the Arabian Sea.  

Speaking to reporters, MPT Dy Conservator Capt Manoj Joshi said: “Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area, along and off Kerala and Karnataka on June 10 and 11, Eastcentral Arabian Sea and along and off Maharashtra Coast on June 11 and 12, Northeast Arabian sea and along and off Gujarat coast on June 12 and 13. Those who are out in deep sea areas are advised return to the coast,” said Capt. Joshi.  

“The MPT has recieved port warnings for Goa and Maharashtra coast. A depression has formed over Southeast and adjoining Lakshadweep and Eastcentral Arabian Sea and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST on Monday, about 200 km west-northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 840 km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 1020 km southsoutheast of Veraval (Gujarat).”   

“It is very likely to intensify further into a deep depression during next 12 hours and into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours,” 

said Joshi.  

Meanwhile, it is reported that there could be a cyclone in the Arabian Sea, which could move parallel to Goa coast bringing gusty winds, thunder and heavy rains. It is also reported that the cyclone is likely to affect South Goa first before hitting North Goa.
