Ahead of the new fishing season, traditional fishermen from Benaulim on Friday launched a country-made canoe in the sea after invoking the blessings of the Almighty as they braced up for a new fishing season after a monsoon break.
Parish Priest Fr Anthony Rodrigues blessed the fishing boat as the fishermen stacked the vessel with a rampon (traditional fishing gear). The fishermen then pulled the boat into the sea and cast a net before returning ashore, marking the commencement of the new fishing season.
After blessing the country-made boat and the traditional fishing gear, Fr Anthony reminded that fishing with rampon has been a God’s gift to the fishermen over the centuries, which has helped the community to eke a living and supply fish to the fish-eating people as well. While invoking the blessings of the Almighty on the fishermen and their traditional occupation, Fr Anthony called for government support to the brothers, who have maintained the rich heritage and tradition, despite all odds. “We have seen people migrating outside by leaving their occupations. But, our fishermen brothers and sisters have still maintained the traditional occupation,” he said, while making a fervent plea to the government to extend all possible help and assistance to the fishing community.
Fr Anthony added: “The government should step in and support our brothers and sisters engaged in the traditional fishing occupation.”
