The Goa Assembly on Friday passed a resolution congratulating Droupadi Murmu on being elected as the 15th President of India.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant led the House in applauding Murmu’s feat who became the country’s first tribal woman to win the top constitutional post.
All the MLAs supported the resolution.
Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant said Droupadi Murmu was an ordinary person who rose to hold the highest constitutional post in the country.
“I am an ordinary worker who became the CM and Droupadi Murmu has become the President of India. It’s only in the BJP that an ordinary person can rise to great heights,” Sawant said.
He said three members of the opposition voted in favour of her in the State showing her popularity.
“I thank the opposition members who voted for our presidential candidate,” he said.
Applauding Murmu’s election to the high office, Congress MLA, Digambar Kamat said her journey in life was a very difficult one and therefore her election to the office makes it more credible.
“I hope she will make all of us and the country also proud,” Kamat said.
MLA Michael Lobo said Murmu’s election was stupendous, particularly since she came from the tribal community.
He said he expects the President-elect will live up to the truest democratic values and make the country and the world proud.
