CANACONA
Advising the fishing community to focus on education, Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar has said fishermen would stand to gain immensely, socially and economically, through education.
Halarnkar was addressing the ‘Sagar Manthan’ organised by Akhil Goa Kshetriya Pagi Samaj at Rajbhag-Tarir in Canacona.
Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar said he shares a close relationship with the Pagi Samaj and assured that the All Goa Kshatriya Pagi Samaj will also benefit with the Samaj Bhawan built at Rajbag.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar also spoke on the occasion.
CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar claimed that in other talukas, non-Goans have virtually taken over the fish markets.
“However, as women in the fishing community in Canacona did not abandon their businesses, non-Goans could not occupy the lone fish market of Canacona and we need to appreciate this,” he said.
Entrepreneur Rajesh Tarker said young women have been given jobs in their establishment and promised to share 25 per cent of the income for the upliftment of society.
Others present at the function included Rajesh Tarker of Rajdeep Builders, AKPS President Ashok Dhuri, ex-CMC Chairperson Diwakar Pagi, Sarvanand Kankonkar, Prasad Pagi and Councillor Gandesh Madgaonkar.
On the occasion, former CMC chairperson and a long-serving Councillor Ratnakar Dhuri was honoured with the 'Pagi Samaj Bhushan' award, while Tulsidas Yesu Pagi and Soham Santosh Pagi were felicitated for their work in society.
