Margao Municipal Council’s plan to cart out the piled up waste at the Sonsodo Waste management shed at a cost of around Rs one two crore seemed to have come under the scanner of the government.
For, while the office of Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) has in principle given the nod to the other works proposed at Sonsodo, subject to approval from the government, the project to cart out the piled up waste and remediate the same at a cost of Rs two crore has evoked reservations from the DMA side.
A delegation of Margao Municipal officials held discussions with the technical panel in the office of the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) seeking administrative approval for a host of projects planned at Sonsodo with the burning issue coming under the scanner of the High Court.
Of the host of works proposed at Sonsodo, sources pointed out that MMC’s plan to remove and remediate the piled up waste inside the waste treatment plant shed has not found favour with the DMA office. If sources are to be believed, the DMA office is expected to deal with the project at a later stage.
MMC sources, however pointed out that since the Civic body had submitted a time line to the High Court, undertaking to clear the waste management shed at Sonsodo in a time bound manner, any decision taken by the DMA will be submitted to the High Court at the next date of hearing.
“The Rs two crore project to cart out the piled up waste and remediate the same was placed before the DMA. They have raised questions over the proposal and have even suggested alternate mode to remediate the existing waste”, informed a Civic official, saying the civic body will have no option than to file a report to the High Court on the matter if the administrative approval for the project is not forthcoming from the government.
The Margao Municipal Council had submitted a detailed time frame for the remediation of the existing piled up waste inside the Sonsodo waste management shed. In fact, the MMC had drawn up plans to clear the shed of the piled up waste within six months.
Meanwhile, sources in the DMA informed that the works proposed by the Margao Municipal Council at Sonsodo, including construction of leachate tanks, platforms and sheds for waste handling has found acceptance from the DMA office. Sources, however, said the approved works will now go to the government, the Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane for final approval.
