Several nets of different types belonging to one Antonio Rodrigues caught fire at Kharewado near Hindu crematorium on Sunday afternoon.

The owner Antonio Rodrigues, who is a resident of London, had entrusted the fishing business to one Mithun Pawar who was managing the business at Vasco.

Most of the nets that were left in the open were reduced to ashes.

Speaking to the media, caretaker Mithun Pawar said that he was at home when some friends called him to inform about the nets on fire.

“I am not sure how the nets caught fire but I assume that it could be due to the sparks of a motor pump which was next to the nets . We had seen sparks coming every time when the motor pump was put on, but we ignored it. Today, I feel that is one main reason for the nets to catch fire. My nets have reduced to ashes and I am almost finished. There were different type of nets meant for catching prawns, small fish, big fish. My losses may be to the tune of more than Rs 5 lakh,” said Pawar.

Vasco fire officer, Vishwas Ashtekar, said he had received a call at around 2.35 pm on Sunday after which they immediately rushed to the site. “When we reached there, some local labourers were already trying to douse the fire with the help of water in buckets. Besides using water, we also used foam and managed to get the fire under control,” he said.
