The Alpha Omega Foundation has threatened to knock the doors of the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court if the authorities fail to initiate action against the fish meal plant in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
In his letter addressed to the CM Manohar Parrikar, Chief Secretary, besides the GSPCB and the Secretary, Environment, foundation general secretary Calvert Gonsalves has called for action against the fish meal plant, alleging it has been discharging polluted water in the ground.
He has insisted that a mandatory inspection by the Central Institute of Fish Technology, Kerala, or any other suitable agency needs to be done, adding that such an inspection will verify and confirm his allegation that the processing production of the fish meal plant has crossed more than 500 tonnes of per day.
In his letter, Calvert has contended that taking into consideration that 500 tonnes of fish being processed a day, he alleged that 70 per cent of the fish is turned into water, which totally amounts to Rs 3.5 lakh litres of fish residue polluted water generated per day. The rest 30 per cent is turned into powder and oil. Plus another one lakh litres of water is required to clean the plant each day. This makes it a total of 4.5 lakh litres of polluted water generated and which needs to be disposed of each day by the plant. In the above circumstances, a critical question arises as to where is all this 4.5 lakh litres of fish residue water going each day,” Calvert told the media.
