Taking cognisance of a report in The Goan about a non-functional mobile toilet occupying considerable space near the Vasco railway station, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) hfinally removed the mobile toilet on Tuesday.
A number of motorists from Vasco have hailed the MMC’s decision to remove the non-functional mobile toilet, as it had blocked the parking of four-wheelers in the port town which is already struggling for parking space.
As soon as the non-functional mobile toilet was removed from the site, several cars were seen neatly parked in the area near the railway station.
Sources in the MMC informed that MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had issued strict directions to the staff to immediately remove the mobile toilet from the area.
When contacted, Agnelo Fernandes said the toilet was removed on Tuesday evening. “The moment I was made aware of the issue, I immediately issued directions for its removal as it was causing inconvenience to people.”
“Since we had Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and some staff were not present, the action got delayed by a few days and the mobile toilet was finally removed on Tuesday. We will also plan to clean up the area and also ensure that no one litters the area or does open defecation.”
Social activist and convenor of NGO ‘Goa First’ Parshuram Sonurlekar hailed the MMC for acting swiftly in the matter.
“People are happy as there is more parking space around the Vasco railway station. The non-functioning toilet, which had turned into an eyesore, has been removed,” said Sonurlekar.
The Goan in a report on September 20 had highlighted the issue after several motorists had objected to the unused mobile toilet occupying parking space near Vasco railway station, at a time when motorists were struggling to find parking space in the port town.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had then informed that the toilet was stationed at the site during Saptah and had not been taken away, but assured that it would be removed soon.
