The traffic sentinel scheme of the Goa police is gaining popularity by the day among Goans and as many as 1500 violations are being photographed and reported on a daily basis.
Launched in 2017, the scheme has become popular among the locals, DGP Muktesh Chander said, adding that it has played a crucial role in reducing fatalities this year, as compared to the number of fatal mishaps reported last year.
The police have also launched the traffic sentinel mobile app to simplify the process of reporting traffic violations by the sentinels. Automaton of the scheme has allowed the traffic sentinel to also check his/her reward points and increase accountability. The app lets users send pictures of the violation directly to the traffic cell and a challan is then automatically issued to the violators.
Goa’s traffic cops will also soon switch to a 100 per-cent digital operation as the department is set to penalize traffic violators through an e-challan system. The process of choosing the partner bank is in process.
The traffic sentinel scheme has been running since November 2017, and a year later the traffic sentinel app was launched. Around 30,000-odd traffic sentinels are registered with the police.
