Taking serious note of frequent traffic jams in Valpoi, authorities on Wednesday decided to implement a traffic plan for Valpoi town from September 1 on a trial basis.
This was decided at a meeting of different officials concerned in Valpoi. The meeting was by Sattari Joint Mamlatdar Ranjit Salgaonkar in the absence of Sattari Mamlatdar Dasharath Gawas, who was busy on official work in Panaji.
Valpoi town has been plagued by traffic congestion on a regular basis, causing severe inconvenience to emergency services like ambulances and fire tenders, motorists and pedestrians. Several attempts had been made to resolve the problem since the past few years, but these have been largely unsuccessful.
Responding to growing demands from public, Gawas had convened a meeting of officials to discuss the traffic issue and to work out an effective solution. Those present at the meeting included Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) Vice-chairman Sarfaraz Sayyed, Valpoi councillors Atul Datye and Rashikant Chari, Valpoi Police Sub Inspector Amit Polekar, Bicholim RTO Anvi Pednekar and VMC Market Inspector Madura Natekar.
Sayyed presented the traffic plan prepared by VMC. He said this would be very helpful in regulating traffic in the town.
Salgaonkar said VMC’s traffic plan should be implemented for public benefit and directed departments concerned to implement it on a trial basis. After the meeting, the officials inspected various spots in the town. Highlighting the salient features of the VMC traffic plan, Sayyed said the vehicles coming from Honda will be made to directly enter the town from Fatima Convent road. The vehicles will turn near the Goa Bagyatdar Complex and will come into Valpoi town from the Thane-Valpoi road, he explained.
“Care will be taken to ensure that there is no inconvenience to public. This traffic plan will be implemented on a trial basis so that any minor issues can be sorted out before it is made permanent,” Sayyed added.
