Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik on Monday said he would appoint a five-member expert committee to study the agriculture scenario in the State.
Naik said scientists including Nandakumar Kamat and four more experts will be on the committee.
"We have decided to form a committee of five members to undertake a detailed study on the agriculture scenario in the State,” said Naik, while speaking to media persons.
“We need to ascertain how much land is actually available for agriculture, what kind of agriculture is feasible and can be done in the State. This detailed study will be done by the expert committee,” said Naik.
The minister said the experts will also study the conversion of land and how much land is actually remaining for agriculture.
“We will also study agriculture with reference to the climate in Goa. For example, sugarcane in Goa is not of superior quality and sugar production is lower as compared to Maharashtra and other states,” he said.
Naik said he had visited the offices of the agriculture department on Monday to take stock of work in the department.
“I will ensure that the benefit of all agriculture schemes is actually disbursed to the public,” said Naik.
To a query on agriculture in Khazan land being damaged due to frequent collapse of bunds, the Minister said he would seek information about the damage of bandharas which had affected Khazan agriculture.
Responding to grievances that people are not getting Krishi Cards, Naik said he would try to have the pending Krishi Cards issued as early as possible.
When asked if all farmers had got compensation for the damage to their crops due to the cyclone and floods, the agriculture minister confirmed that compensation had been given to all affected farmers.
