The monsoon is all set to hit the State, but storm water nullahs in many parts, including Mandopa in Navelim are still awaiting desilting.
While the Water Resources Department has taken up desilting of the storm water nullahs in the commercial capital at a cost of around Rs 16 lakh, the Mandopa storm water nullah is craving for attention, with locals fearing flooding this year for want of desilting.
Former Aquem-Baixo sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat pointed out that the storm water nullah passing through Mandopa has not been desilting till date. Pointing out the nullah which was covered by a carpet of weeds, Bhagat feared that failure to desilt the storm water nullah will result in flooding this year. “If one takes a look at the storm water nullah, it is apparent that the weeds will hamper the smooth movement of the rain water. This will result in flooding in the low-lying areas,” Bhagat said, demanding that the Water Resources Department take note of the state of affairs of the nullah and takes up the desilting work.
“The monsoons will set in the next few days, but the storm water nullahs have not been desilted till date. If the Mandopa-Navelim nullah is not desilted, it would only mean that flooding will take place even at Rawanfond and Aquem-Baixo,” he said.
