Churchill Brothers’ entry into the Indian Super League has been welcomed by members of Goa’s football fraternity, who believe the club’s return to the top tier will provide a major boost to the state’s football culture and local talent.
Former All India Football Federation Secretary General Dr Shaji Prabhakaran said Churchill Brothers’ presence would add a new dimension to the ISL in Goa, particularly with the prospect of the state’s first local derby in the league.
“With Churchill Brothers FC having an opportunity to play in the ISL, it will certainly bring a great focus to Goa. For the first time, there will be a local derby match in Goa in ISL history. That will give local fans a bigger reason to attend ISL games, and the derby can become one of the big games in Goa,” Prabhakaran said.
Former India central defender Franky Baretto congratulated Churchill Brothers and said their participation could inspire greater support for Goan football and create opportunities for local players.
“Congratulations to Churchill Brothers FC on getting the opportunity to play in the ISL in the upcoming season. I hope this brings a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm among Goan football fans to support one of their own,” Baretto said.
“More importantly, it’s a fantastic opportunity for talented Goan players to step up, earn their place in the team and showcase their ability on the biggest stage. Wishing Churchill Brothers a successful ISL campaign. Goa needs its own football clubs, and its footballers need this opportunity,” he added.
Goa Football Association North Goa vice-president Jonathan de Souza also welcomed the development and congratulated the Churchill Brothers management.
“It’s great to see Churchill Brothers playing in the ISL. Their experience, passion and contribution to Indian football will be a great addition to the league. Wishing Churchill Brothers all the very best and hoping to see them make a strong impact. Congratulations to the entire management of Churchill Brothers,” de Souza said.
