For the first time, the Goa Administration, in consonance with other agencies like the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) created a “green corridor” for the transport of donated organs from a deceased patient who was declared brain dead at Dona Paula’s Manipal Hospital.
Dr Shekhar Salkar, who heads the Manipal Hospitals in Goa informed that through a coordination with the team officially sent by the ROTTO-SOTTO at Mumbai, who arrived by a chartered flight organised a green corridor, which allows the quick transport of the organs by road to the airport, while the airport authority helped in quick landing and take off.
The organs were harvested by a special team which arrived from Mumbai and left the Manipal Hospital at 3:10 pm and were transported onwards to the Goa airport and were flown to Mumbai.
The donor, B Sadashiv Rao, of Vasco had pledged his organs to others while he was alive and as per his wishes, the donated organs will be given to those needing them.
The case is the first in Goa wherein a green corridor was created for the transport of harvested organs ensuring that there are no delays due to traffic hold ups or any other reasons.
