Forgiveness will lead to happiness: Dada Vaswani

Aiming towards a world without war, the living saint and spiritual head of Sadhu Vaswani Mission (Pune), Dada J P Vaswani was in Goa to interact with the audience on Monday evening. In a two-part series here are some excerpts from his insightful thoughts

Q: How can one forgive someone who has hurt or harmed us?
We can forgive those who harm us - by taming our ego. One must learn the art of forgetting the wrongs done by others and forgive them. It is in forgiving that we grow. The more difficult the situation is to forgive, the more it will open up the energy that is within a human being. Don’t hesitate in forgiving. All happiness comes through forgiving.

Q: How can one get rid of negative thoughts?
Look within. Take care of your thoughts by paying less attention to outer chaos. Flush the evil thoughts out of your system, kick them out, drive them out. As thoughts are themes, forces and building blocks of our own destiny, they are the masters of our fate. They take us to actions which become our habits. Be careful of forming new habits as they make you a slave. Get at the depth of your conscious and cleanse it of everything that makes you miserable. Only healthy thoughts will lead to a healthy body.

Q: What is the simple way to meditate?
Choose a silent corner, shun outer noise. Practice meditation at the same time and same place. It’s important. The simplest type of meditation is concentrate on your breath. Meditate with your breath - breath in, breath out. Take some holy name - of any God you choose but utter with love, affection and devotion. The repletion should not be mechanical.

Q: Why is there so much killing?
Hatred in the human heart expresses itself in killing people. Greed is also the reason. This is the period of Kaliyuga where negative forces are supreme. They catch hold of the heart of man. Education trains the brain/head but heart/emotions are not educated. Emotions are masters and brain is the servant. If we think with head it’s logical but when heart dominates, we tend to err.

Q: Why every honest person has to suffer while dishonest flourishes?
It’s because of the law of Karma. The rule of life should be to keep doing good work as much as you can.

Q: Overall, the exploitation of the weak by the mighty has increased. Do you agree?
Exploitation is there. It is a negative quality, an influence of ego. Ego wants everything and it suppresses others to get what it wants. Education teaches us how to keep ego under control. Earth will be heaven if ego is controlled. Humans have the capacity to do so but they don’t use it.

Q: How can we control the mind?
Deny the mind what it wants. Say ‘no’ to whatever the mind asks and reach the height of holiness.

Q: Why does our heart mourn to see anyone suffer, plant or animal?
It is because of sympathy and empathy - whatever you call it.
