Kartik Kudnekar (46), former president of the North Goa Zilla Panchayat and president of the Shri Khapreshwar temple at Porvorim, passed away after a brief illness in the early hours of Thursday.
He was admitted to GMC Hospital at Bambolim and had undergone surgery, but died while undergoing treatment.
The final rites were held at the Socorro crematorium later in the afternoon. He is survived by his wife, Kirti, and two sons, Sayeedeep and Yashdeep.
Kudnekar had recently contested as an independent candidate in the Socorro ZP election. Because of his poor health, he was unable to campaign and released a video on social media to reach out to voters. He was later expelled from the BJP for contesting as an independent.
He was elected as a Socorro ZP member on the BJP ticket in 2020 and later became president of the North Goa Zilla Panchayat.
Kudnekar had led the campaign against the shifting of the Shri Khapreshwar temple due to the Porvorim elevated corridor project and later distanced himself from the BJP. After strong public opposition, the temple was rebuilt at the same site.
