Former Ribandar corporator and BJP leader Rupesh Halarnkar on Saturday joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

TMC Goa state incharge and MP Mahua Moitra inducted him into the party.

"He was with the BJP for 18 years and was a two-term corporator from the Ribander area. His wife was also a corporator,” said Moitra.

Commenting on the party’s strategy to take in leaders from other parties, Moitra said the TMC, which is not an established party in Goa, would work as a platform for Goan political leaders.

Accepting the reality that Goa is a small state, Moitra said taking leaders from other parties has been necessary.

Halarnkar said his work for the people would continue after having joined the TMC.

“If we have to defeat BJP, then TMC is the best option which has vigour and courage to defeat BJP. Didi (Mamata Banerjee) and TMC is showing such courage and vigour so I have decided to join TMC,” he added.

“After deliberations with my colleagues and well-wishers, I felt I can build a good organisation under TMC in Panaji constituency,” said Halarnkar, adding that he would work for the party without any expectations.
